Pintor y grabador estadounidense. Estudió en Boston y París antes de establecerse en la ciudad de Nueva York. Desde 1898 hasta 1918, exhibió junto a un grupo de pintores de Nueva York y Boston, conocidos como The Ten (Los Diez), quienes se convirtieron en los principales precursores del
impresionismo estadounidense. La vida urbana fue su tema favorito, pero sus paisajes de Nueva Inglaterra y de Nueva York rural también se hicieron populares. Pinturas como
Washington Arch, Spring (1890) se caracterizan por una atmósfera clara y luminosa, y un brillante colorido. También realizó unas 400 aguafuertes y litografías.
